School of Saint Mary Unveils New Mosaic Created by Students

The School of Saint Mary is pleased to announce a new art installation adorns the main entrance of the school building. Students, teachers, parents and guests will be now greeted by a 4-foot by 6-foot mosaic of the Blessed Mother Mary, the school patron. The tile mosaic was designed and executed by Saint Mary parent and alum, Anna Kallstrom (Sullivan).

In the summer of 2024, Kallstrom proposed the idea of a mosaic on the exterior of the School of Saint Mary to Father Stuart Crevcoure and former principal, Suzanne Nelson. Kallstrom has created large-scale mosaic murals for more than 20 years under the wing of local mosaic artist Linda Allen, who donated all of the tiles for the project.

Kallstrom, who currently teaches art at Bishop Kelley High School, designed the piece so that students in all grades (K-8) could adhere tiles to designated sections, making the project hands-on and collaborative. Numerous volunteers assisted, many of whom were also Saint Mary alumni.

“I loved the idea of the kids walking past their artwork each day, knowing they helped create something so beautiful with their hands,” Kallstrom said.

The overall design shows radial light shining from God onto Mary, then from Mary onto us. With her arms open, Mother Mary stands upon the clouds with her gaze downward, showing her submissiveness to God. Upon closer inspection, viewers will see small treasures donated by students. From rocks to seashells to broken bits of jewelry, the treasures act as small gifts from the students to our Blessed Mother.

The mosaic not only serves as a devotion to Mary, but also to Suzanne Nelson for her 40-plus years of dedication to the School of Saint Mary. “Mrs. Nelson was one of my favorite teachers and serves as an example of loyalty and commitment. She has high expectations of her students and teaches in an engaging manner. We are forever grateful to her years of service to Catholic education,” Kallstrom said.

The school dedicated the mosaic on Friday, August 15 (the Assumption of the Blessed Mother Mary).
