Anyone who has attended the Easter Vigil will attest to the beauty of the service of light, the moment when the church is lit entirely by candles. It symbolizes the resurrection of Christ, the light of the world.
Tenebrae is the opposite.
It takes place on Wednesday of Holy Week and features a gradual extinguishing of candles. The candles cast shadows across the church prefiguring the darkness of Good Friday.
The Church of Saint Mary will offer Tenebrae on Wednesday, April 17 at 7:45 p.m.
