Away in a Manger, No crib for a bed
We are a Pro-Life Community. We know that many babies in Tulsa do not have a safe and separate place to sleep, and are therefore at risk of sleep suffocation before their first birthdays. The Women’s Ministry is leading a parish-wide effort to support babies and their caregivers by collecting:
- New or gently-used Pack ‘N Play cribs (approx. $45 if new)
- Cash donations to purchase these cribs in bulk
We will be collecting these offerings after all masses on these weekends:
- July 10/11,
- July 17/18, and
- July 24/25.
Every year in Tulsa County, babies die before their first birthdays due to unsafe sleep arrangements. Many infant deaths are due to suffocation while sleeping with a parent, other siblings, or accidents while napping on couches or other furniture.
Loose blankets and soft pillows within the sleeping environment also add to the danger. At least 62 babies died in 2013-2017 in Tulsa County due to unsafe sleep environments.
Many parents and caregivers lack the resources to provide a separate, safe baby bed for the infants in their care. Last year, Tulsa’s Emergency Infant Services provided 1,272 Pack ‘n Play sleeping cribs to area families in an effort to improve each infant’s chances to survive to their first birthday. They are projecting a higher number of cribs needed this year.
We can make a difference in these startling statistics by supporting Emergency Infant Services in their efforts to keep babies safe.
