Music Ministry at the Church of St. Mary

|
Adult Choir
The adult choir is comprised of men and women of all ages who assist in the weekly liturgical life of St. Mary’s primarily at the 10:15 a.m. Sunday Mass. Additionally, the choir sings at other important liturgical celebrations throughout the year. The choir is also a fine group to cultivate stewardship, musical ability and strong relationships with other parishioners in a warm, caring environment.
The choir rehearses each Wednesday from 7:30-9:00 p.m. in the church from mid-August through the Feast of Corpus Christi. Social gatherings are held throughout the year. The choir has also traveled extensively over the past eleven years to destinations in Italy, Germany, Austria and France. Their next journey is slated for the summer of 2007 to Italy and Greece.

Handbell Choir
St. Mary’s is also blessed with a dedicated group of people who provide additional support to liturgies throughout the year ringing a 4-1/2 octave set of Malmark handbells and choirchimes. They meet each Wednesday from 6:30-7:30 p.m. from mid-August through May. While music reading skills are helpful and desirable, membership is open to anyone willing to learn and laugh at themselves in the process!

Children's Choirs
Choir is open to all parish family members in grades 1-5th.
Cherubs (grades 1 & 2) meet on Tuesdays from 3:00-4:00 p.m. in Beckerle Hall
Choristers (grades 3,4,5) meet on Tuesdays from 4:00-5:00 p.m. in Beckerle Hall. Choir Season is a commitment from September until May. Regular attendance is required for all choir members. Musical skills are learned only with consistent practice over a period of time. The choir is a team and each member is needed to continually improve and learn their musical skills.
Choir is not just an after school activity. Both choirs will sing by themselves and combined throughout the year during different Mass times.
Each choir learns the basics of proper singing technique of breathing & diction; basic rhythm and note reading are taught every week through musical games and percussion instruments. The Cherub choir learns most anthems by rote (looking at words and memorizing the melody). Each Chorister member has their own folder, which contains the printed music, from which they read the music to learn the anthems.
