Legion of Mary
The Legion of Mary is a worldwide apostolic organization of Catholic adults and youth, who offer their services to their pastor to aid him in performing spiritual works in the parish. Members become instruments of the Holy Spirit through a balanced program of prayer and service under the banner of Mary, so that with her help they may develop greater holiness in their own lives as well as spread a deeper devotion to her among others.
Our parish Praesidium (or chapter) at St. Mary started with its first meeting on May 13, 2002. Its name is Our Lady of the North Star. Currently, nine members are active and 25 people serve as auxiliary members who commit to praying the
Tessera prayers daily.
Our weekly meetings follow the framework of the Legion book. We meet in the parish Library on Thursdays from 7:00-8:30 p.m. for prayer and learning. Associate pastor Fr. Joe Townsend is our parish contact. Our spiritual director is Fr. Peter Byrne from the Order of St. Peter and offers the Latin Mass at St. Augustine Church.
The Legion of Mary’s objectives are 1) personal sanctification of its members, who, taking Mary as their model, endeavor to imitate her virtues, especially her Faith, Charity and Humility; 2) spread of devotion to Mary, primarily by encouraging the recitation of the
Rosary, Mary’s request at Fatima; 3) performance of apostolic work under the direction of the Spiritual Director.
St. Mary’s spiritual works of mercy include evangelizing door-to-door, teaching children the Rosary, leading the Rosary for funerals, serving as Christian initiation sponsors, sewing burial gowns for babies and taking Communion to nursing homes and to parishioners who are sick and dying.
