FrJack Vocations discernment article

Everyone Has Vested Interest;
Vocations Are Everyone’s Business

Fr. Gleason, pastor of the Church of the Madalene and diocesan Vocations director, has written this article for their prayer book which is used with their Vocation Crucifix program:

“Vocations are everyone’s business. What do I mean by that? I mean everyone has a vested interest in their own and other people’s discernment of God’s will for them in their lives. If you want to be happy, do what God is calling you to do. If you desire others’ happiness, help them do what God is calling them to do.”

“Healthy marriages need both a nurturing environment to discern their commitment and the support of the community after they have made their vows; vibrant singles need both the wisdom of family and friends to discern their gifts and participation of the Church to call forth those gifts in service to others; priests and religious need both the input of their fellow Christians to discern a life of service to the Church and the prayers and support of the people of God to live faithfully their calling.

“This community must be dedicated to assisting others in discerning God’s will in their lives, calling forth the gifts and talents we see in others, nurturing those who respond to God’s call through our prayers and support. To this end, we have made a commitment to pray for vocations at every Mass and to ask households to share in the specific intention of praying that God will raise up holy men and women in service to the Church.

“God is calling us to lives of holiness and to invite others to explore more fully God’s call in their lives. May the prayers we offer join with the prayers of the Church Universal in building up the Kingdom of God.”

Did you know… the word “vocation” comes
from a Latin word meaning “call” or “to be called”?
One’s vocation is nothing less than the call of God
to live life in a particular way. It is not what you do,
but who you are.

Discover your Christian vocation!

The primary role of parent's involvement in their children's vocation is to provide an authentic witness to the importance of faith, prayer, and service to others. This includes teaching their children that all that one is and has comes from God, and that if we truly want to be happy, we will discover how God wants us to use the gifts we have received. “A vocation is a call to serve. It is a profession, an urge, a predisposition to undertake a certain kind of work. It is a choice for which you are particularly suited. The question always is “how best can I serve God and others?” (from Serra for priestly and religious vocations)
